Walter Goldberg, brilliant orchestra conductor, renowned in the USA, returns to Italy after a 10-year absence to direct an opera from its beginnings. During the first dress rehearsal, the conductor feels faint and leaves the stage. He takes refuge in his hotel, pretends he is ill and announces that he his giving up his contract. The Admistrator of the operahouse gradually gets him to admit the real reason for stepping down.
Walter Goldberg, brillant chef d’orchestre célèbre aux USA, revient en Italie après dix ans d’absence pour y diriger l’opéra de ses débuts. Au cours de la première répétition générale, le chef d’orchestre est pris d’un malaise et quitte la scène. Il se réfugie dans son hôtel, fait croire qu’il est malade et annonce qu’il renonce au contrat. Le Directeur de l’Opéra l’amènera petit à petit à avouer la vraie raison de son désistement…
